Dom followed Emily from the truck bay of the fire station into an office with a couple of desks, a computer, printer, maps on the walls and a white board with notes and lists that had obviously been written by various hands. The station was incredible, more like a lodge with its rock walls, fancy architecture, and high ceilings. Dom hadn’t even seen either of the fire places that Emily had mentioned.
However, even with the new, exciting surroundings and the giant fire truck, the most amazing part of the station visit was the woman who’d invited him. Last night she’d been in a beautiful dress with her hair that looked professionally done. Today she had on a simple dark blue uniform and yet she was still irresistible. Simple, yet somehow elegant. How had such a perfect woman not found Mr. Right?
“This is just our office,” she said. “We do some paperwork here, some training. Leave notes on the white board for the other shifts.”
“What does OGYWC, CHB mean?” asked Dom, reading large letters in the center of the board.
“Old Guy, your wife called, call her back. Sometimes the acronyms get pretty complex and you have to track down the person who wrote it to get an interpretation. C’mon, the rest of the guys are going to be in the kitchen.”
They went through another doorway to a flight of stairs, which surprisingly led down instead of up. “We don’t get to take the fire pole?” asked Dom.
“We don’t have one,” said Emily with a frown. “Since the living quarters are downstairs the department didn’t think we needed one.”
“Makes sense.”
“Not really,” said Emily with a grin. “They didn’t take into consideration our rush to get to chow or back to bed after a late night call.”
He followed her down three short flights of stairs and noticed she took a deep breath before reaching for the door handle. Dom was quicker, and pulled it open for her.
They stepped into a large room that was combination kitchen, dining area, and family room. Three huge refrigerators lined one wall of the kitchen with a large island and plenty of cabinets. In the family room area, a row of five recliners faced a gigantic flat screen TV. At an angle to the rest of the room was a fire place with custom stone mantle, and bench. Yep, this place was fancier than many lodges he’d been in.
Two guys were in the kitchen, pulling things out of a fridge and lining up pots on the stove. One of them had sandy blond hair and carried a few extra pounds. Probably a few dozen extra pounds. The other guy was fit, had dark hair, and looked to be a couple years younger than Dom. Both had mustaches that could only be described as hideous.
Pointing to the pair, Emily said, “Dom, that’s JFK and Powers. And over there is Quad C. He’s the captain.” She nodded toward a big, burly guy sitting at the kitchen table reading something on a clipboard.
